The 2020-21 girls basketball season came to a close as Corunna defeated Ovid-Elsie, 53-33, in the District Semi-Finals at Owosso Wednesday night. Corunna (12-3) will advance to play Lake Fenton (12-1) in the championship Friday night. Ovid-Elsie ends their season 12-5.
"This is a tough way to end our season," said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham. "But if we put it into perspective, all-in-all we had a great run. We recorded 12 wins and really didn't have a bad loss - the teams that beat us were just better and that includes Corunna tonight."
Those five teams have a combined record of 57-17 and four of them (Byron, Dansville, Portland and Corunna) are all playing for District Championships.
Corunna got out to a fast start and led 10-7 after the first quarter and followed it up with an 11-5 second quarter run.
"They have two standout players that were tough matchups for us," noted Cunningham. "We played them hard and we played hard all night but I have to give credit where credit is due and as I said, they were just better."
Corunna standouts Ellie Toney and Sydner Gillett scored a combined 43 points, 24 and 19 respectively to propel the Cavaliers.
Junior Caitlyn Walter finished with a team high 10 points while freshman Ava Bates added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Hailee Campbell added 5 points and 6 rebounds while Evalyn Cole scored 4 points, and Kaylee Hall, Tristin Ziola and Kiah Longoria each added 2 points. Madison Cunningham added 3 steals while Longoria led in assists with 4.
"I'm disappointed for our seniors," said Cunningham. "They have done so much for our team and I hate to see them go out with a loss. Hopefully they, and everyone associated with this program - players and families, will look back at this season and realize what we accomplished. We have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to be proud of. And we have a lot to look forward to in the future."
