Lady Marauders Defeat Ithaca in Thriller

The Ithaca Yellow Jackets traveled to Ovid-Elsie Wednesday night for a non-conference match up which saw Ovid-Elsie pull away for the win 56-50.  Junior Caitlyn Walter finished with a career high 25 points after knocking down five three-pointers on the night.

"She definitely got hot," said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham.  "The great thing is those shots came out of the natural progression of our offense.  She didn't have to force anything and when you're that hot, any coach is going to keep getting her the ball."

After a 9-2 opening quarter, Ithaca came storming back but the Marauders were able to match their run with a 16-14 second stanza and took a 25-16 lead into the locker room at half.

"They (Seaman) hit a half court shot at the buzzer when we were up twelve," noted Cunningham.  "That gave them a little momentum."

The Lady Marauders battled in the third but lost the quarter 19-17 making it 42-35 at the end of the third.  A 15-14 edge by Ithaca in the fourth made the final score 56-50.

"It was nip and tuck the whole game.  They got to the free throw line a lot throughout the game and our free throws came late while they were trying to foul and stop the clock.  I give my kids a lot of credit for hanging in there and making free throws down the stretch," Cunningham added.

Ithaca shot 13 for 29 from the line while OE went 15 of 26, but shot a solid 6 of 9 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Marauders got 8 points from Madison Cunningham and Braeden Tokar while Tristin Ziola chipped in with 5 points.  Ava Bates added 4 points, and Kiah Longoria and Hailee Campbell 3 points each.  Longoria and Ziola led in rebounding with 6 each.

Cunningham said the Marauder game plan was to slow down two elite scorers (Lydia Davenport and Delaney Seaman).  Seaman finished with a team high 19 points while Davenport added 12.

"Those are two really good players and they're coming off a season (last year) where they went 22-2 before the shut down.  It doesn't show up in the scoring column, but Evalyn Cole and Kiah Longoria did a great job on Seaman and Tokar did a nice job on Davenport," said Cunningham.

Ovid-Elsie improves to 6-3 on the season while Ithaca falls to 3-6.  The Marauders will be back in action Friday night as they travel to New Lothrop who is currently 5-1 and 3-0 in conference play.
