NEW LOTHROP HIGH SCHOOL: 22
The Ovid-Elsie Lady Marauders used a stingy defense and a huge third quarter run to improve to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in the MMAC as OE downed New Lothrop, 56-22. The Hornets fall to 4-3, 3-1 MMAC.
"The first half we were trying to figure things out a little bit and still playing a little too fast on the offensive end," said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham. "We talked about a few things at half that we thought were easy fixes and the girls just executed."
After leading 18-9 at the end of the first half, Ovid-Elsie went on a 24-2 third quarter run to take the air out of the Hornets. The Lady Marauders led by as many as 36 during that stretch.
Caitlyn Walter led all scorers with 14 points to go along with 3 steals while Kiah Longoria notched 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
"I thought our guard play was outstanding tonight," noted Cunningham. "Longoria has really stepped up her game this year and to see a guard grab nine rebounds is pretty impressive."
Ava Bates chipped in with 8 points while Braeden Tokar added 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 8 steals. Evalyn Cole added 4 points and 3 steals while handing out 5 assists. Rylee Lewis, Izzy Loynes and Kaylee Hall each connected on a three-pointer to finish with 3 points each and Katie Lorio knocked down a free throw to round out the scoring for the Marauders.
Ovid-Elsie handed out 15 assists on 22 made baskets and collected 21 steals off of 32 New Lothrop turnovers.
Ovid-Elsie will hit the road next week for two conference games at Montrose on Tuesday night and then at LakeVille on Friday night. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
