MT. MORRIS HIGH SCHOOL: 40
Senior Caitlyn Walter had a season high and game high 24 points including four triples to lead the Ovid-Elsie Lady Marauders (5-0, 2-0 MMAC) past Mt. Morris, 65-40. Walter also added 3 assists and 2 steals.
"I thought we struggled with their size a little bit tonight and defensively we weren't as sharp, but we did a lot of good things and we came away with a conference road win," said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham.
Ovid-Elsie opened up the game on an 11-0 run before the Panthers finally got a bucket to go and the Marauders led 20-9 at the end of the 1st. A 13-11 Mt. Morris advantage made it 31-22 at half time but Ovid-Elsie would use a 34-18 second half advantage to keep the Panthers at bay.
"It was a very physical and rough game," noted Cunningham. "They had several technical and intentional fouls, but our kids kept their cool and just played the game. I'm really proud of them."
In a game that saw all twelve players play, Kiah Longoria also notched double digits with 10 points to go along with 4 steals, while Kaylee Hall added 9 points and 4 assists. Rylee Lewis and Evalyn Cole (3 assists and 3 steals) each chipped in with 8 points each. Izzy Loynes, Ava Bates and Hailee Campbell each added two points while Bates led the team with 11 rebounds.
"I was really pleased with how Lewis was able to come in and knock down some big shots and Hall was all over the place making hustle plays and bothering their guards," said Cunningham. "We see a lot of zone and when our kids are knocking down three's like they did tonight and running the floor, the zone itself doesn't bother us."
Ovid-Elsie heads into the break unbeaten while Mt.Morris drops to 1-4, 0-2 MMAC. Ovid-Elsie will return to home action after the new year as a make up game against Durand will take place on January 4th. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
