The Ovid-Elsie Lady Marauders will advance to the District Semi-Finals Wednesday night and take on Corunna, after OE beat Durand Monday night, 49-24. Ovid-Elsie improves to 12-4 on the season while the Railroaders finish 8-8.
Ovid-Elsie used scoring runs of 11-2 and 18-8 in the first two quarters to build a 29-10 lead at half. Caitlyn Walter connected on five three-pointers en route 17 points in the first half. The junior sharp shooter ended the night with a game high 19 points.
"We got off to a pretty good start," said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham. "When Walter is hitting shots like that, we're gonna keep getting her the ball. That's a great 'zone breaker'".
The Marauders would lose the third quarter 9-6 but rallied in the fourth stanza to take a 14-5 advantage.
"We knew we had to stop (Lawrence) and keep her from getting to the basket," added Cunningham. "Cole and Longoria did a great job on her all night and held her to just 6 points."
Senior Madison Cunningham added 7 points and 6 rebounds while Kiah Longoria (5 rebounds) and Ava Bates each added 6 points, Hadley Bukantis 4 points, Tristin Ziola, Braylon Byrnes and Hailee Campbell with 2 points each and Evalyn Cole a free throw to round out the Marauder scoring. Bates led on the boards with 8 caroms while Cole led in steals with 7 and shared assist honors with Longoria with 3 helpers each.
Ovid-Elsie (12-4) will take on Corunna (11-3) Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Owosso High School. The winner will advance to play the winner of the Lake Fenton (11-1) and Owosso (5-10) game Friday night.
